CORINNA, Maine (WABI/Gray News) – The mother of a 3-year-old boy who was found dead in the snow Sunday morning in Maine is giving more details about what happened.

Maine State Police said that the boy’s aunt called 911 around 8:30 a.m. saying her 3-year-old nephew was missing.

Authorities said the father found the child unresponsive in the snow a short distance from their home in the town of Corinna.

Police said the boy died from what appeared to be exposure to the elements.

In a comment in a private Facebook group, the boy’s mother said her son escaped outside because the home’s door had previously been kicked in by another family member. She said the door was yet to be fixed and all that kept it closed was a bolt.

She said that when she woke up that morning, the door was open, and her son was gone. She adds it was her husband who eventually found him outside in the snow.

The mom ended her comment by asking the community to “let us mourn and heal in peace.”

The boy’s name has not been publicly released.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by his aunt to help the family pay for funeral costs.

The page said the “sudden and unexpected loss” of the 3-year-old has left his mom, dad, and two siblings “completely heartbroken.”

“He was such a strong loving caring funny happy little boy. He loves his family with such unconditional love and was loved back so unconditionally by everyone that knew him,” the GoFundMe page reads.

Maine State Police said they can’t comment on an ongoing investigation.
