Motherwell and Wishaw MSP Clare Adamson has said that social security is a “crucial safety net” following First Minister John Swinney outlining his long-term vision to eradicate child poverty across Scotland.

The First Minister set out that tackling child poverty in Scotland will be rooted in three key pillars: a dignified and generous social security system; people-centred public services; and through a positive education system.

In North Lanarkshire, the SNP’s Social Security System already supports families through the unique Scottish Child Payment, and Best Start Grant package.

From next year, the Scottish Government will mitigate the UK Government’s two child benefit cap.

Ms Adamson said: “Tackling child poverty will require bold actions. I have been deeply concerned by the rhetoric coming from the Labour Government on social security.

“Social security is an entitlement and a crucial safety net for people in vulnerable financial circumstances. Our social security system in Scotland is founded upon the principles of dignity, fairness, and respect.

“Scotland’s people suffered under a decade of Tory austerity. Their hostility towards people accessing social security entrenched discrimination across the UK.

“I am appalled to see Labour threatening a similar approach despite promising an end to austerity.

“I back First Minister John Swinney in his long-term vision to eradicate child poverty through a dignified and generous social security system, people-centred public services, and a positive education system.”
