AUSTIN, Texas — An Arctic cold front is making its way to Austin, and businesses and people are already preparing to protect their plants from potential freezing temps.
Along Congress Avenue, several businesses had insulated clothes covering their plants on Friday.
Mark Gibbs at the Great Outdoors in South Austin said he started seeing a big rush of people Thursday who were looking to buy insulation clothes for their plants.
“This does not let the frost through,” Gibbs said. “It captures three to four degrees of ambient temperature once it’s on the plant material.”
Gibbs said if a plant’s not covered in below freezing temperatures, it can do serious damage.
“If we are getting past 8, 10 and 12 hours of below 32 [degrees], that’s when plants- especially with a heavy breeze- that’s when plants are going to take the most stress,” said Gibbs.
Austin expected to see very cold temperatures on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
