A man has died after a horror crash with an HGV lorry in Aberdeenshire.

Emergency crews including an air ambulance were scrambled to the A90 at West Auchries, Cruden Bay, Peterhead at 1pm on Friday, January 17.

Police received reports of a collision involving an HGV lorry and a grey Toyota RAV 4.

The 53-year-old male driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been informed. The driver of the lorry, a 47-year-old man, was not injured.

The Scottish Ambulance Service sent several units to the scene including three special operations response teams (SORT), one trauma team, and one air ambulance.

Footage from the scene showed the chopper land on a nearby field.

The road was closed for 13 hours while police probed the crash. The route reopened around 2am on Saturday.

Officers have appealed for any witnesses of the crash to come forward with dash-cam footage.

Road Policing Sergeant Eoin Maxwell said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the man who died at this very difficult time as well as with the others affected by this collision.

“Our enquires remain ongoing to establish exactly what happened. I would ask anyone who was in the area around the time to contact us with any information, no matter how significant they believe it may be. If you have a dash-cam, please review your footage as it could prove significant to our investigation.”
