A mum whose daughter has a chronic health condition meaning she’ll never live alone has come up with a genius way to give her child a slice of independence.

Lissa, who regularly posts life updates to the TikTok page @LissaJade, explained her 18-year-old daughter had been diagnosed with Myoclonic Envephalopathy Jeavons’ Syndrome – a rare type of epilepsy that causes eye flickers, trembling and seizures – in 2020 after 11 years of frequent hospital trips and visits to the GP.

“Due to my daughter’s diagnosis, she won’t ever have a home of her own,” Lissa explained. Outlining her plan, she said: “So I created an apartment door for her bedroom.”

In order to make her daughter feel special, Lisa painted the once plain white door turquoise and added a stunning white post box with pink roses. She also added a floral door matt as well as a plant with lights and a beautiful wreath. Plus, she added a light that looks like a street lamp to create her daughter’s very own apartment, right in the comfort of her own home.

She also fashioned a doorbell and added a door number – 206. The big reveal in the viral video showed how stunning her daughter’s special room looks.

Lisa added: “Thank you all for the overwhelming support and love for my daughter’s door! We’re working on getting a P.O. Box set up for her to be able to receive mail from all who wish to send!”

People rushed to comment on the sweet gesture, as one individual wrote: “This is one of the most loving things I’ve ever seen. To grant her her own autonomy in a safe way. This is beautiful. I am so joyful to know love like this exists in the world.”

“This is so beautiful, brought tears to my eyes,” said another. Another mum who can relate commented: “So beautiful, my 23-year-old daughter has been battling cancer for six years. She will most likely will live with us forever. Thank you for sharing this.”

One individual shared that their parents had done similar for her. She said: “My mom and stepdad did something like this for me and it’s the best thing that ever happened. I have an anxiety and panic disorder that keeps me from being able to leave the house. They built me a garage apartment.”

She added: “I’m able to have my own space, but also walk over whenever. She’s known from a young age that I likely wouldn’t ever be able to live without her.”

Another mum who has a daughter with down syndrome, said: “My daughter with downs just turned 18 I’m so doing this! Great idea.”
