Fed up with endlessly scrolling through Netflix, moaning that there’s nothing fresh to watch?
Then the new thriller Missing You might just capture your attention. Launched on New Year’s Day, this limited series spans a mere five episodes, ideal for those hesitant to commit to lengthy TV shows.
It centres on Detective Kat Donovan (played by Rosalind Eleazar), who stumbles upon her long-lost fiancé Josh on a dating app, 11 years after his mysterious disappearance.
“Kat soon realises that Josh (Ashley Walters) might be connected to a missing persons case she’s investigating, as well as her father’s murder,” teases Netflix. “Now with more questions than ever, Kat begins to wonder who she can trust as she tries to uncover what really happened.”
With a decent score of 6.1/10 on IMDB, the show has reeled in viewers nationwide, leaving them all echoing a similar sentiment.
Of course, if you’re wary of spoilers, you might prefer to steer clear of discussions about the show’s plot twists.
The series’ five episodes are packed with revelations. For those still reeling from the finale, which ends with John Waite’s song Missing You, here’s a brief recap: Kat discovers Josh’s involvement in her father’s death, and that he had an affair and worked for a notorious crime boss before his demise.
The series concludes with Kat and Josh sitting together on a bed, where he confesses to accidentally killing her father. As Kat gazes into the distance, tears in her eyes, she touches Josh’s hand, hinting at possible forgiveness.
The show’s twists sparked a flurry of reactions on social media. One X (formerly Twitter) user exclaimed: “Missing You on Netflix is one of them shows that make you jump out of your seat CAUSE WTF IS HAPPENING?” Another viewer agreed, saying: “Just finished ‘Missing you’ on Netflix and wtf..”
A third user felt the show lost its way, commenting: “Missing You on Netflix was good until the plot started to unravel. They lost it I fret,” while a fourth viewer wrote: “Missing You on Netflix… crazy. Like I knew who the killer was but the reason he was killed…? NUTS! ” While some viewers were less critical, a multitude of X users hailed the show as ‘amazing’ and clamoured for a second series.
However, it appears this won’t be on the cards. “Like all of Harlan Coben’s previous Netflix shows, Missing You is a limited series,” IMDB clarified.
“This means it was designed to be a self-contained series with a complete story told within a single season. While some may argue that the show ended in a way where more story could be told, that’s just not going to happen. The mystery thriller pretty much ended the same way the Missing You book did.”
