Warning: Contains spoilers for season seven of Outlander
A star of the historical fantasy drama Outlander has issued an emotional statement on Instagram after the season seven finale revealed the fate of her character.
Fans were left on tenterhooks after Claire (portrayed by Caitriona Balfe) sustained a bullet wound in the first half of the season. In the latest episodes, viewers discovered that she managed to survive her wounds and had headed to Fraser’s Ridge to recover.
Ahead of the show’s finale airing, Balfe took to Instagram to say an emotional ‘goodbye’. She penned: “Time to say goodbye ….. our Season 7 finale airs tonight. Thank you for watching and being with us on this journey. It’s been an epic season.
“Our cast and crew, writers and producers put their hearts and souls into this season …. We hope you’ve enjoyed the ride and we so look forward to coming back one last time for Season 8 …. See you there.”
Fans poured in to the comments section to offer up their thoughts on the actress’ portrayal of Claire on the show. One penned: “No one could deliver Claire the way you did. I don’t have words to explain how grateful I am for you. This episode was amazing and you were out of this world. Thank you for loving this character more than anyone else and have such caring for her. This shows how much you were born for this and how much we’re still gonna see you shine. Can’t wait for season 8.”
Meanwhile another shared: “You’ve given us the most visceral, raw performance seven seasons in. Absolutely breathtaking to watch. Congrats on another season [sic].”
A third show fan added under the post: “I could use every superlative to describe #Outlander, the series. Season 7b has been everything and more. EPIC! Thank you, Sam, the rest of the cast and crew. I hope the last Droughtlander won’t last too long!”
Elsewhere in the shocking season seven finale, fans learned the true identity of Jane Pocock (Silvia Presente). She decides to end her own life with a glass bottle after being sentenced to death for murdering a high-ranking British officer who posed a threat to her sister, Frances (Florrie May Wilkinson).
It would appear Jane’s story doesn’t end there though. Earlier, Claire had a dream about her ancestor Master Raymond (Dominique Pinon) seeking forgiveness. Later, when the Frasers agree to foster Frances, Claire is moved by a song she sings; it’s the same lullaby she sang to her stillborn baby, Faith, years earlier. This convinces her Faith is still alive and was actually the mother of Jane.
Fans may have some time to wait until the eighth season releases and they get more answers, but in the meantime a spin-off show titled Blood of My Blood has been confirmed which will dive deeper into the franchise’s lore.
Outlander is available to watch on MGM+ via Prime Video in the UK and on Starz in the US
