Amazon Prime fans keep watching a new series they have dubbed ‘one of the best police dramas’, which was only recently added to the series.

On Call was released earlier this month and has already proved one of the most popular additions of the year on the platform. At the time of writing, the eight-part series is the fifth most-watched title on Amazon Prime overall after being released less than two weeks ago. It is currently the third most popular series behind the docu-series Molly Mae: Behind It All and the reality gameshow Beast Games.

The series is a stylised police drama that follows a rookie and veteran officer duo on patrol in Long Beach, California. It stars Troian Bellisario (Pretty Little Liars ) as hard-charging but protective veteran officer Traci Harmon, who struggles to find her place in the department while training the next generation of officers.

Brandon Larracuente (The Good Doctor) plays Alex Diaz, an ambitious rookie who grapples with holding onto his optimistic outlook as he realises the challenges he’ll face in the job in the current climate.

Shot with a mixture of hand-held cameras, bodycam, and dash-cam footage to create a cinema verité effect, the innovative series explores the morality of protecting and serving a community.

The show is co-created by Eliot Wolf, the son of legendary TV producer Dick Wolf. Eliot also serves as a writer on the show. At the same time, his father, behind long-running dramas including Law & Order, FBI, and Chicago P.D., acts as executive producer on the Amazon series. The style of the show should suit fans of the underrated police drama Southland, which adopted a similar approach.

Fans have also compared it to hit films End of Watch and Training Day. One posted their thoughts online, saying, ” It gives Training Day vibes but doesn’t follow the same route. Troian Bellisario as Officer Traci Harmon is absolutely fabulous, and so is Brandon Larracuente as Officer Alex Diaz with his edgy performance. The series is all out action every single minute. The drama and the excitement never stop!”

Another shared similar thoughts, claiming it didn’t take long before they were hooked and watched the whole series. They said: “I thought it was amazing and was glad to be able to binge-watch them all in one day. The great first ten minutes of the series had me hooked for more. Hope we are going to get a second series.”

However, some viewers suggest that the only negative thing about the series is that each episode lasts less than 30 minutes. One said: “One of the best police drama tv shows out here. Great cop show like it’s quite intense and really realistic especially it shows the perspective of a police officer on duty and what they go through their shift. The downside of this show is that they are short episodes of 30 minutes with 8 episodes which goes really fast. Really loved it and hopefully they come out with season 2 and more. Highly recommend watching it.” (sic)

Another added, “On Call is the best police series that I’ve ever seen! It is raw, realistic, and up to date with what our society is going through now. Although I wish the episodes were 60 minutes in length, the 30-minute format for this series works. I hope that the producers will continue with a second season and beyond.”

On Call is streaming on Amazon Prime.
