Ruben Amorim has pulled no punches after Manchester United’s defeat to Brighton, saying his team are one of the worst sides in United history.
The Portuguese boss has won just five of his 15 matches in charge at Old Trafford since replacing Erik ten Hag in November, and watched his side warm up for a huge Europa League clash with Rangers by slumping to a 3-1 home loss against Brighton – leaving them 13th in the Premier League table, only 10 points clear of the relegation places. And the former Sporting boss didn’t mince his words after the match, saying: “We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United. I know you want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and change that.
“In ten games in Premier League, we won two. I know that. Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me. “We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach.” Yankuba Minteh got Brighton off to a dream start as they took a fifth minute lead, which was cancelled out by a Bruno Fernandez penalty. However the Seagulls netted twice in a dominant second-half through Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Ruter – and had a Joao Pedro effort ruled out by VAR for a foul.
The Red Devils are now preparing to welcome Rangers to Old Trafford in the Europa League having won just five of their 16 home matches domestically, and United defender Noussair Mazraoui has warned his teammates to take nothing for granted, especially with his countryman Hamza Igamane in red hot form. He said: “Stopping Igamane is one of the challenges for us. He has been excellent for Rangers. Our defenders will need to pay attention to him and not give him space in the penalty area. That will be really important.”
