Top gun Jay Henderson insists the battle to be Ayr’s goal king is good for all Honest Men.

Winger Hendo shot to the top of the Somerset charts with his first career hat-trick in the cup rout at Broxburn.

The on loan Ross County star has now bagged 13 for the season since his summer move south from Dingwall. And he claims there’s no personal scrap with United striker George Oakley, who’s hot on his heels just one goal behind.

Henderson said: “There’s no battle between us and it’s all good for the team. Big Geo is helping me and I’m helping him, so we can only benefit each other and the team.

“Saturday was my first career hat-trick so I was delighted to get it. I’ve come close a couple of times before and was probably trying too hard in the end to get this one.

Henderson and George Oakley have formed a lethal partnership of late

“Goals are important in the position I play, but when I came here my main focus was to get assists on the board. I’ve just tried to get myself in the right positions and take chances when they come and I’ve done well so far.

“Hopefully it continues. The results are certainly going well at the moment.”

United have lost just once in 10 games and battered Brox with a devastating display. It was the club’s biggest ever away victory and Henderson said: “We’ve got our mojo back but we’re taking it one game at a time.

“Next up is another big one against Partick. Every game is massive and you can’t look too far ahead.

“We’ll just keep plodding along and hopefully the form will continue. We’ve a good mix of youth and experience and we just have to keep doing what we’re doing.”

Boss Scott Brown hailed Henderson’s growing impact and said: “The wee man creates so much for us and causes teams so many problems. He has ability on the ball but also an understanding of when to play forward and what areas to hit.

“You can see the quality he has in the final third and he’s made a big difference to us since coming in with the goals and assists that he’s produced.”
