A building in Edinburgh was evacuated on Sunday afternoon after police discovered ‘potentially hazardous substances’.

Officers were called to a building on The Pleasance at around 4.45pm on Sunday afternoon after materials were found in one of the rooms. Police cordoned the surrounding area off as a precaution and residents were provided shelter.

The materials were established as not hazardous. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 4.45pm on Sunday, 19 January 2025, we were called to a building on The Pleasance, Edinburgh, following the discovery of potentially hazardous materials within one of the rooms.

“An exclusion area was put around the building which was evacuated as a precaution. Residents were provided shelter.

“It was established the materials were not hazardous. Enquiries are ongoing.”
