PRINCETON, W. Va. -With the freezing conditions on this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day, many celebrations in our area have been canceled. However, you can still commemorate the day while keeping warm indoors.
In a post on Facebook, the Hatter’s Bookstore in Princeton suggests spending some time reading about the life of Martin Luther King Jr. or about the Civil Rights Movement that he helped shape. The bookstore’s owner, Rebekah Snow, had some recommendations: Mine Eyes Have Seen: Bearing Witness to the Struggle for Civil Rights by Bob Adelman, a visual retelling of the story of Civil Rights through photographs, and My Brother Martin: A Sister Remembers Growing Up with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a children’s book written by Christine King Farris, the sister of Martin Luther King Jr.
She also recommends looking in their “social justice” and “social justice memoirs” sections to find out more about the fight for civil rights. She says reading these nonfiction books could be a perfect way to spend Martin Luther King Junior Day and may be an opportunity to learn something that you might not have known otherwise.
“What an inspiring man. I mean, an amazing speaker, what he stood for was amazing. He just… I think he really envelopes a huge part of social justice…” says Snow, “…Even if you’re not familiar with that kind of genre, it’s really good to reach out of your comfort zone, especially when reading books because you can learn a lot from just a different genre that you’re not typically used to.”
The Hatter’s Bookshop is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and on Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
