AUSTIN, Texas — Meals on Wheels Central Texas is encouraging its clients to plan ahead for an interruption in meal deliveries on Tuesday due to winter weather.
The organization, which helps deliver hot meals and check on seniors and individuals with disabilities, said it will close on Jan. 21, for the safety of its staff and volunteers. The closure means the interruption of home-delivered meals, kitchen operations and the closure of the Congregate Lunch Centers.
Meals on Wheels Central Texas serves over 3,000 community members.
Neighbors are encouraged to check on others who need support during this time. Freezing temperatures, ice and snow can pose increased risks to older adults and people living with disabilities, the organization said.
Neighbors can prepare for winter weather conditions by gathering essentials and knowing their emergency contacts. On the day of the interrupted meal delivery services, clients are asked to use one of their five shelf-stable meal kits that were provided at the beginning of winter.
The organization also recommends neighbors have a supply of water, a supply of medication and extra blankets to stay warm. Vulnerable community members should avoid going outside or being near drafts until freezing conditions subside.
Meals on Wheels Central Texas said it is not available to assist clients in the event of an emergency.
A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the Austin metro, the Interstate 35 corridor and the Coastal Plains from 6 p.m. Monday until 6 p.m. Tuesday. During this time, 1 to 2 inches of snow and sleet accumulations could cause travel issues on roads, especially on bridges and overpasses. In the Hill Country and Milam County, there’s a Winter Weather Advisory for that same time period.
