Netflix’s latest sensation, the “gripping” Swedish true-crime series The Breakthrough, is captivating viewers so intensely that they’re watching the entire series in one go.
The spellbinding four-part series, adapted from Anna Bodin and Peter Sjölund’s 2004 book, delves into the second-largest criminal investigation in Sweden’s history.
Linköping, a city previously undisturbed, was shattered by a double homicide in broad daylight that saw a child and an older woman fatally stabbed.
For 16 agonising years, the perplexing case remained unsolved as police grappled with a lack of suspects or clear motives. The investigation took a significant turn when a genealogist joined the team of detectives working on it.
Streaming on Netflix since earlier this month, The Breakthrough has generated a buzz on X (formerly Twitter), with fans singing the praises of its “highly watchable” narrative, reports Surrey Live.
A viewer enthused on X saying: “I’ve just watched a Swedish ‘true’ crime series on #Netflix called #Genombrottet / #TheBreakthrough. It’s about a double murder that became the second largest investigation in Swedish history. Really well made show. Watch it!”
Another chimed in with: “Finished a wonderful watch #TheBreakthrough using genealogical for criminal cases,” and a fan gushed: “#TheBreakthrough 10/10 for a great show and short episodes.”
Countless others expressed their thrill at the series’ “binge-worthy” 40-minute episodes and lauded the “terrific performances” by the leading cast members.
Helmed by Lisa Siwe and penned by Oskar Söderlund, The Breakthrough boasts an ensemble cast, including Peter Eggers, Mattias Nordkvist, Jessica Liedberg, Jonatan Rodriguez, and Karin de Frumerie.
The talented line-up is rounded out by Annika Hallin, Julia Sporre, Malin Güettler, Anna Azcárate, Marley Norstad, Pevin Hannah Namek Sali, and Helen Al-Janabi.
“Though this is a fictional drama series about a crime, it is, above all, a depiction of a human tragedy – where we place our focus on the victims and the investigation rather than the perpetrator,” Siwe explained in a previous statement to Netflix.
“It’s a story about the compassion and care for one another that is needed to move on when terrible things happen.”
