It’s been eight years since Trump was inaugurated as 45th President of the US. Today, he returns to office as the 47th.
Monday’s inauguration will see current President Joe Biden transfer presidential power to Donald Trump. Due to extreme temperatures in Washington DC, the ceremony has been moved inside the US Capitol building, instead of taking place on its steps.
The Republican leader will return for a non-consecutive second term after winning November’s election against Kamala Harris.
But will the US inauguration be available to watch in the UK? And what time should people tune in if they want to see the show? Here’s what to know.
When will the inauguration take place in UK time?
Chief Justice John Roberts of the Supreme Court will administer the presidential oath, with Vice President-elect JD Vance taking the oath of office first, followed by Trump himself. The oaths will be taken at the US Capitol building in Washington DC today at around midday in the US – 5pm in the UK.
While people in Britain can catch the official ceremony from this evening, many outlets will be starting their coverage earlier in the day from about 3pm onwards.
Mr Trump will then recite the oath in full: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States, and will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
After the oaths have been taken, Trump is to give his first presidential address of his second term in office.
The 47th President will then take his first official actions of his term in the president’s room off of the Senate Chamber of the Capitol building.
These actions could include signing nominations, memorandums, proclamations or executive orders.
Where can UK viewers watch Donald Trump’s inaugeration?
UK viewers can watch the inauguration on BBC One and iPlayer starting at 3.30pm. Sky News, ITV, and Channel 4 will also provide live coverage of the event. Livestreams will also be available on YouTube.
The White House website will also be showing a livestream, and it will be available to stream online via CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS News, and Fox News. As these are American channels, they may not be available for viewing in the UK so it’s important to check this first.
From roughly 8pm in the UK, 3pm in the US, Trump will lead the inaugural procession. Washington’s Capitol One Arena will host this parade as Trump joins supporters after swearing in as President.
Military parades, bands, and floats will follow as the event will continue with several inaugural balls taking place across DC.
Some 25,000 law enforcement and military personnel will be deployed as security during the event, including the entire DC police force, 7,800 National Guard troops, and 4,000 officers from across the country.
The ceremony will boast an audience of all living former Presidents, including Barack Obama (Michelle Obama declined to attend), Joe and Jill Biden, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and George W. and Laura Bush.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and X and Tesla CEO Elon Musk are also expected to be part of the guest list.
