Motherwell, Wishaw and Carluke MP Pamela Nash is encouraging local residents to help dispel the myth of ‘Blue Monday’ by having a brew.
The third Monday of each year is often cited as the most depressing day of the year – and this year it falls today (Monday, January 20).
Suicide prevention charity Samaritans runs an annual ‘Brew Monday’ campaign which aims to debunk the idea of Blue Monday and highlight the importance of talking and the positive impact that a simple cuppa and chat with a friend or relative can have.
Pamela said: “The Samaritans Brew Monday campaign sets out to rubbish the idea of Blue Monday, which originated as a gimmick to sell holidays. There is simply no one day of the year when everyone feels low.
“On Monday, join Samaritans volunteers and supporters across the country by sticking the kettle on and having a brew and a good blether!
“If you’ve noticed someone in your circle of family or friends has gone quiet recently, please reach out and check in. A simple message or a chat can have such a big impact – it could even save a life.”
Around 23.000 people volunteer for Samaritans at 200 branches across the UK – 19 of which are based in Scotland, including the Lanarkshire branch in Hamilton.
The helpline is available 24/7, 365-days-a-year, with volunteers answering a call every 10 seconds.
Anyone can contact Samaritans for free any time from any phone on 116 123, even on a mobile without credit. You can also email [email protected]
