MASON COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A West Virginia Division of Highways worker is recovering after being hit over the weekend while performing emergency repairs in Mason County.

According to the West Virginia Department of Transportation, the injured worker and another crew member were out repairing potholes on Rt. 62 Saturday when the two noticed a truck that didn’t appear to be slowing down.

The WVDOT says both workers tried to move out of the way, however, one of them ended up being hit.

“It’s upsetting that anyone gets hurt in the highway system at all, let alone one of our transportation workers,” said Stephen Todd Rumbaugh, the newly named Transportation Secretary. “Safety is going to be a priority with this administration.”

The WVDOT says both workers were wearing reflective clothing and lights were flashing on their work truck at the time.

The injured worker suffered a fractured femur, broken arm and separated his shoulder. He was taken to Pleasant Valley Hospital in Point Pleasant and later transferred to St. Mary’s Medical Center.

He is still recovering in the hospital. According to the WVDOT, the man had surgery to repair his femur and will require additional surgery to his arm and shoulder.
