Jim White rolled back the years with a Rangers flashback to 2015 – and took Ally McCoist by surprise with his sharp memory.
The Ibrox side were one of the big talking points on talkSPORT McCoist and Jeff Stelling looked ahead to Thursday’s blockbuster Battle of Britain with Manchester United. The two giants face off at Old Trafford in a crucial Europa League showdown and Tavernier joined the broadcasters live to look ahead to it.
Jim White was a keen listener and he was brought in straight after Tavernier finished. And he surprised McCoist when he reminded him Tavernier was actually one part of a double signing back in the summer of 2015, signing from Wigan on the same day Martyn Waghorn made the same move. White said: “James Tavernier, he was a double signing at Rangers. He and Martyn Waghorn signed from Wigan on the same day.” It was a reminder that took the Rangers hero by surprise and White added: “You’re looking at me as if to say ‘get out the studio’…”
But McCoist replied: “No I’m not, far from it. I’m in congratulations mode! I didn’t know that.” Speaking on the morning show, Tavernier said he fancied Rangers to continue their strong European form against a United team branded possibly the worst in their history by their own manager, Ruben Amorim. A win would put Gers above the Premier League giants and further secure their spot in the top eight.
And Tavernier said: “You’ve got to fancy yourself against anybody. Obviously they’re going through a difficult patch at the minute, so we’re going to work on how we believe they’ll be setting themselves out against us. We’re going to work really hard over the next couple of days to put that gameplan into the game and hopefully get that win.”
