A variety of egg brands in Canada are being recalled over the possible contamination with salmonella.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a warning on Saturday, January 18 that six egg suppliers may have been affected by the bacteria, urging shoppers not to consume them.

The Independent reports that the brands affected by the CFIA recall include Golden Valley, Compliments, Foremost, IGA, No Name, and Western Family eggs. Various packs and sizes of eggs have been affected, with a full list on the CFIA website.

Shoppers who have purchased any of the packs affected by the recall are being urged to either throw them away or return them to store where they were purchased. It has also been advised that people should not serve or sell them either.

The recall comes after Costco’s 24-count cartons of Kirkland eggs were recalled from stores across the US after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found they had “the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella”.

The FDA revealed in December 2024 that the recall was a “Class 1”, the highest risk level issued, which meant that exposure to the affected products could cause “serious adverse health consequences or death”.

The classification came just one month after around 10,800 units were affected by the recall that affected Costco stores across the South of America.

What is salmonella and what are the symptoms?

Salmonella is a common bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract in both animals and humans. It is currently one of the leading causes of food poisoning in the United States.

While food contaminated with the bacteria doesn’t always look or smell spoiled, it can still make you unwell if consumed. Those with weaker immune systems, such as children, pregnant women and the elderly are most at risk.

According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms include diarrhoea, stomach cramps, fever, vomiting, nausea, chills, headache, and bloody stool. While most cases resolve on their own after a few days, those with symptoms are urged to see a doctor if they last for longer.
