Outlander’s lead actress Caitriona Balfe has left fans inconsolable with her touching farewell post on social media.

Her character Claire Fraser may be coming back for one last chapter along with her husband Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) but, for now, they’ll both be missing from our screens.

Season seven of the hit Starz historical drama came to an end last Friday (January 17) with a stunning finale.

As well as confirming Claire’s fate following her brush with death, there were also some startling revelations about the Fraser family which fans are still finding hard to believe.

While the dust is still settling on another riveting Outlander instalment, Balfe took to her Instagram page to say her penultimate goodbye to the series.

“Time to say goodbye ….. our Season 7 finale airs tonight,” she wrote.

“Thank you for watching and being with us on this journey. It’s been an epic season … our cast and crew, writers and producers put their hearts and souls into this season ….

“We hope you’ve enjoyed the ride and we so look forward to coming back one last time for Season 8 …. See you there …..”

In addition to the final season, Outlander fans also have a prequel series, Blood of My Blood, to look forward to.

Even so, Balfe’s fans were still distraught that Claire and Jamie’s epic tale will soon be coming to an end.

“This season was simply amazing,” one Instagram user replied. “I love this twists and turns, it’s prob one of my favs next to season 1.

“Thank you for bringing these characters to life. I’m not sure what I’ll do once we have seen season 8 and it’s over forever.”

Florrie May Wilkinson’s Fanny Pocock has quickly become a fan-favourite

“What a beautiful episode and what a way to end the season,” someone else commented. “I actually cried…. We now know more than what was written in the book.”

“It was a beautiful episode!!! You and @florrie_may_wilkinson broke me!!!” a third fan said.

Another agreed: “It shows how hard you all worked for over a year to give us such an epic season. Some of the most outstanding episodes.

“I was a wreck after the scene with you and Fanny @florrie_may_wilkinson ! Just brilliant work.”

And a final fan simply said: “Spent another episode sobbing. Amazing acting.”

Fans were clearly impressed by breakout star Florrie May Wilkinson, who portrayed Fanny Pocock, the younger sister of Jane Pocock (Silvia Presente).

In a heart-stopping revelation, Jane and Fanny were revealed to be potentially related to Claire and Jamie.

While Jane’s story sadly came to an end, young actress Wilkinson is clearly one to watch out for as Fanny is expected to return under the Frasers’ wing in season eight.

Outlander is available to watch on MGM+ via Prime Video in the UK and on Starz in the US.
