Production of an award-winning Scottish ice cream brand is being moved to England.

Cream o’ Galloway has been produced at Rainton near Gatehouse of Fleet in Dumfries and Galloway for 30 years.

However, Brymor Ice Cream – who bought the brand in 2024 – are now moving production of the much-loved treat to their base in North Yorkshire.

A statement said: “Over 2024, the manufacturing continued at the farm with no changes, which allowed us to understand the brand, customers and manufacturing processes.

“It was evident from the outset that the manufacturing equipment and the whole site was tired and required significant new investment. Therefore, we are consolidating the manufacturing to the Brymor site.

“Brymor has over 40 years’ experience in ice cream manufacturing and can provide a wealth of knowledge to continue to produce this much loved range of real dairy ice cream.

“By manufacturing at Brymor, the brand will benefit from newer, more efficient equipment, as well as benefiting from the sustainable and environmentally friendly resources that Brymor has implemented over the last four years.”

Wilma and David Finlay launched Cream o’ Galloway at Rainton in 1994 and the award winning brand was sold around the world.

The site also included an ice cream parlour, visitor centre and adventure playground, although the latter closed for good in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic.

In September 2023, the visitor centre was shut while the sale of Cream o’ Galloway to Brymor took place.

But the following month Brymor announced the centre was to be re-opened.

However, it appears that was just a short lived move with production moving to England and the ice cream parlour set to be based at The Cocoabean Company in Twynholm.

That will also be where the ice cream is distributed from.

The statement added: “Our goal is to continue to produce a high quality, real dairy ice cream made on the farm, using creamy whole milk and high quality ingredients. We will continue to distribute the Cream O’Galloway range from Ashlands, Twynholm, so that we can service our valued customers in Scotland, Northumberland and Cumbria.

“We have also moved the ice cream parlour offering to within The Cocoabean Company.

“This means all local customers and holiday visitors can continue to use the full range of ice cream at The Cocoabean whilst enjoying the fabulous facilities, events and of course chocolate at the Cocoabean.

“We look forward to continually working with customers, partners and suppliers in 2025.”

The Finlays continue to own Rainton Farm and The Ethical Dairy cheese brand.
