British tourists planning a trip to Spain this year are being warned to be prepared to present at least four pieces evidence before they will be allowed entry.

The change in entry requirements to the popular country is set to be implemented this year as part of the new Entry/exit system (EES).

The new, automated system requires visitors to scan passports at an automated self-service kiosk instead of having it manually stamped at border control.

But tourists are being told to prepare to hand over documents as well as your passport if asked by border guards, reports Birmingham Live.

Now the Foreign Office has advised that visitors may be asked to show:

1. A return or onward ticket

2. Proof of their travel insurance

3. A hotel booking confirmation or invitation if staying with friends or family.

4. Proof they have enough money for the duration of their stay.

The EES has already been pushed back in November and is now expected to roll-out this year. In the meantime Brits are still requid to have their passports stamped.

When the EES is in operation, the scanning of a passport will see the system register a person’s name, type of travel document, the date and place of entry and exit, as well as biometric data like fingerprints and a facial image.

According to Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, the minimum amount required to prove you have enough money for your stay is €114 per person per day, the equivalent of around £95.

If the length of stay is nine days or more, travellers must have at least €1,021 (around £859). These figures have not yet been updated for 2025, so could be subject to change. Visitors can show their financial means by presenting cash, a traveller check or a credit card accompanied by a bank statement. Online bank statements will not be accepted.

While you might not be asked to provide this evidence, it’s worth having the documents on hand when you arrive, as being unable to present them when asked can result in a refusal of entry.
