Wrexham star James McClean is being assessed by medics after a car crash on his way to training.

The Republic of Ireland international winger was understood to have been driving to training in his Audi RS6 just before 9am on January 22 when the incident took place close to Wrexham Golf Club. According to the Daily Mirror eyewitnesses said the 35-year-old’s vehicle appeared to be written off in the collision which has occurred a day before the Welsh side are due to take on fellow big-spenders Birmingham City in a crucial promotion clash in EFL League One.

Wrexham, who are owned by Hollywood A-listers Ryan Reynold and Rob McElhenney and have hit the headlines after a hugely successful behind-the-scenes Disney+ series, have confirmed the incident in a statement. A club spokesperson said: “Wrexham AFC can confirm that a first-team player has been involved in a car accident this morning (January 22) on his way to training.

“It was a single car accident with no other vehicles involved and the relevant local authorities were quickly present at the scene. The player reported to the club this morning and will undergo further medical checks as a precaution.” One supporter posting on social media claimed: “Written his car off and holding a bleeding arm. Doesn’t look good. He was walking around his black Audi. Smashed up. Loads of cops.”

A North Wales Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 9am this morning (Wednesday, January 22), we received a report of a single vehicle road traffic collision on the A534 in Wrexham, near to Wrexham Golf Club. Officers and colleagues from the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident, which had blocked the road until the vehicle was recovered shortly before 10am. No serious injuries were reported from the scene.”

The former Republic of Ireland international joined Wrexham from Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2023. Last season, he helped the club achieve automatic promotion from League Two. Previously, he spoke about his love for Celtic, claiming he had wanted to join the Parkhead club for more than a decade.
