Lanarkshire police have warned residents about the dangers posed by bogus crime.

Officers have highlighted that these criminals will carry out work and take a deposit but never return, some will distract in an attempt to gain access to your home, some will overcharge for substandard work and others may charge more than originally stated.

Bogus callers can include people pretending to be council staff, charity collectors, meter readers and police officers.

Police are asking the Lanarkshire public to be a part of the prevention by looking out for these criminals, but also the most vulnerable in their communities.

You can spot a rogue caller if “they tell you the work needs to be done immediately and they ask to paid there and then”.

They may also offer to go to the bank with you if you don’t have the cash at hand.

Police advice includes: “If someone is persistent, ask them to call at another time and get a friend or family member to be with you.

“Never agree to pay for goods or give money to strangers who arrive at your door.

“And don’t keep large amounts of money in your home.”

If you see anyone suspicious take a note of their description; if they provide a name write it down and write down the registration number of any vehicles they are using; you can also visit here for help and information.
