A Ravenscraig councillor has spoken out in favour of a proposed new housing development in the area.

McTaggart Construction and Ravenscraig Limited’s proposals would see the delivery of 48 affordable homes on Prospecthill Road and a neighbourhood retail hub to the south east of the site with commercial units and potential drive through development.

Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig Labour councillor Kenneth Duffy said: “This proposed development and retail space will not only bring new affordable housing to our area but will hopefully serve as a catalyst for further growth and regeneration in Ravenscraig.”

As well as the proposed new homes the plans also include 14,500 sq ft of retail space.

Russell Wilkie, Director at Ravenscraig Limited, added: “It’s fantastic to see the proposals from McTaggart Construction which will add to our future mixed residential offering and bring retail space to the mix too.

“I know that local residents are very keen to see a retail offering within Ravenscraig and we are eager to see this delivered quickly alongside McTaggart Construction.”

However, despite the proposals Councillor Duffy has also spoken about the need for new schools within the area.

In March last year, plans to deliver a new primary school joint campus in Ravenscraig moved a step forward.

As part of a report approved by North Lanarkshire Council’s Policy and Strategy Committee, Ravenscraig was included as one of three priority locations for delivery of a new community hub over the next five years.

The proposed first primary schools for the former steelworks land will also act as a community hub meaning the joint campus will be available for wider use to support leisure and recreational activities.

Councillor Duffy added: “It is crucial that attention now turns to educational needs.

“With new families moving into the area, the priority should now be the long overdue development of new schools.

“I am looking forward to working alongside partners to not only support the housing and retail developments but also advocate for the planning and construction of new educational facilities that align with our community’s growth strategy.”
