The “wee bridge” route linking Hamilton and East Kilbride will close for resurfacing next week, with nearby residents being warned of potential significant delays during the course of the five-day project.

Newhousemill Road will be shut from its junction with Muttonhole Road in Hamilton to its junction with Lismore in East Kilbride from 8am on Monday, January 27 – meaning there will be no traffic access across Newhousemill Bridge.

Roads officials from South Lanarkshire Council say the essential resurfacing project is due to finish by 4pm the following Friday, January 31, “weather and resources permitting”.

The official diversion for motorists travelling from Hamilton to East Kilbride will be via Parkneuk Road and Sydes Brae to the East Kilbride expressway and A726 Strathaven Road.

Drivers are being asked to void the route, while traffic marshals and site staff will be in place throughout the project.

Announcing the project on their website, South Lanarkshire Council said: “General traffic will be unable to travel through the closure during the works, although access will be maintained for residents and businesses as much as possible.

“There may be instances where local access and egress will be significantly delayed depending on the status and progress of works on site. Traffic marshals and site staff will be there to advise and assist where access is required during the working day.”

Head of roads Colin Park said: “We apologise in advance for any inconvenience these essential works may cause to road users.

“It would be helpful if road users could avoid the area if possible, and if not, to leave extra time for their journey and take into account the diversion route. We hope all road users will appreciate the improvements when the works are complete.”
