WYLIE, Texas — The Blitch family has always been enthusiastic about board games, but this time, they’ve upped the stakes.
As the Super Bowl approaches, they’re not just cheering for a team — they’re hoping to take the spotlight in a Doritos “Crash the Superbowl” commercial contest, where they’ve made it to the finals.
“We’re big game people,” says Mark Blitch, a video producer by profession. “My family growing up, they are big game people.”
But this time, it’s a family game turned into a bold, 30-second commercial called “Charades.” Mark Blitch came up with the idea for the ad. He knew he wanted something, “universal.”
“I just thought of Do-ri-tos and couldn’t get it out of my head.”
So, they created an ad that’s anything but ordinary.
“How bold would it be to say Doritos the entire time but never actually say Doritos?” Mark Blitch said.
The commercial entails the dad, one of Mark Blitch’s actor friends, attempting and failing during a family game of charades where the clues are clearly door, eat and toes.
Xander, Mark Blitch’s son, who was recently diagnosed with autism is also featured in the ad.
“They’re like, hey look! It’s Mister Do-ri-tos,” said Xander, describing his new-found fame while in the school halls in Wylie schools.
This contest offers a chance to win a million dollars and tickets to the Super Bowl, but for the Blitch family, the real victory has already happened.
“[Xander] looked at me and he said, ‘Dad, I might be the most popular kid at school,'” he said. “I was asked, what if you don’t win? I was like, ‘I already won.'”
Now, the Blitches are hoping for one more thing — votes. Xander especially needs your support.
“Vote for Charades!” he said.
Mark Blitch says you can vote daily for their ad. Theirs is one of three ads currently in the finals.
The Blitch family are the only Texans in the competition. Voting ends on Jan. 28.
