Police say Vicente Morgado died last Saturday morning after he was electrocuted while trimming trees near power lines outside a church in La Joya. A witness told police the 54-year-old was using a pole saw while on a ladder when his saw touched the power lines, according to KVEO.

The victim’s son, Sebastian Morgado, told KRGV his father died doing what he loved. Vicente Morgado started his landscaping business more than 20 years ago after moving to La Joya from Mexico.

“He took pride in his work. He loved this town,” Sebastian Morgado said. “He always had a smile on his face, always brought joy to everybody.”

Sebastian Morgado also told KRGV his father taught him several lessons, including work ethic, that will help him provide for his family after their tragic loss.

“I always knew this day would come — that I would have to help and provide for my family when he wasn’t here. I just didn’t think it would be so soon,” he said. “I wish I can be half the man he was. If I ever am, I’ll be happy.”

Police say Vicente Morgado was trying to clear trees from the power lines ahead of a cold front, KRGV reports. They urge anyone who plans to do the same to contact their electric company first as “it’s a very dangerous thing to do.”
