East Ayrshire Council has announced that all of its schools will be closed tomorrow (Friday), after a red weather warning for a “danger to life” was issued by the Met Office ahead of Storm Éowyn.
The rare red weather warning was issued by the Met Office for Friday, January 24, as the storm is forecast to bring winds as high 100mph along the Ayrshire coast.
The warning is in force from 10am until 5pm.
As a result, the council has taken the “difficult decision” to close all primary and secondary schools in the area as well as the nurseries and the council’s two skills and learning centres in Kilmarnock and Netherthird.
A spokesperson for East Ayrshire Council said: “A Red weather warning has been issued for Friday, January 24, between 10am and 5pm as Storm Éowyn is expected to bring very strong winds and widespread disruption.
“The council has taken the decision to close all schools and early childhood centres, and SL33 and SL66 on Friday, January 24.
“This is a difficult decision to take and the council understands the impact on parents and carers, however the safety of children and young people is paramount.”
