Tesco has announced a number of stores will be closed in Scotland tomorrow as Storm Eowyn is set to batter the country.

The Met Office issued a danger to life red weather warning for tomorrow, Friday, January 24, from 10am until 5pm as the storm is expected to bring winds of up to 100mph.

Several local authorities have announced school closures due to the weather, and travel operators have also shut down their services as Scots are advised not to travel.

Supermarkets and shopping centres are expected to close their doors too.

Tesco has already sent an email to customers in areas including Ayrshire, Glasgow and Stirling advising them that their stores will be closed tomorrow.

The email read: “Due to red weather warnings, and to ensure the safety of our colleagues and customers, Tesco stores in your area will be closed tomorrow, Friday 24 January. We’re still open as normal this evening.

“This means Home Delivery and Click+Collect orders scheduled for Friday from these stores will be cancelled. If you have a slot booked, we’ll contact you to confirm next steps.

“Our stores will reopen when the red warning is lifted in your area and it’s safe to do so. You can check Store Locator for opening information.

“We’re sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.”

The warning for wind covers Central, Tayside & Fife, south west Scotland, Lothian Borders (including Edinburgh) and Strathclyde (including Glasgow).

Forecasters are warning of flying debris resulting indanger to life, as well as “very dangerous” driving conditions because of fallen trees. It’s expected there could be power cuts, damage to buildings and homes, and delays and cancellations to bus, train, ferry services and flights.

It’s expected winds of up to 100mph could hit parts of Scotland on Friday. An amber warning is also in place for the whole country from 6am tomorrow which runs until 9pm.

A yellow snow warning also comes into force at 6am on Friday morning for Grampian, Tayside and the Highlands. It will last until 11.59pm.
