SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA/Gray News) – A family of six in Louisiana is safe after their 10-year-old son alerted them of a fire in the home.

According to the Shreveport Fire Department, crews responded to a reported single-story house fire in the 8700 block of Elbert Circle just before 6 a.m. Friday.

Firefighters said they saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the front of the home upon their arrival.

Nine fire units, including 27 firefighters and support staff, were able to bring the fire under control in under 30 minutes from the original call.

The fire damaged a bedroom with smoke damage throughout the home, but no injuries were reported.

Fire officials said the family of six was able to escape unharmed thanks to the quick actions of 10-year-old Keron Johnson. He alerted family members of the fire and helped them get up to get out of the burning home.

The official cause of the fire remains under investigation.
