GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN/Gray News) – Camping World, a nationwide RV dealer, is racking up hefty fines for flying a huge American flag in Greenville, North Carolina.
Camping World, at the corner of Evans Street and Red Banks Road, started flying the American flag in October from a 120-foot flagpole it installed.
The flag is nearly 15 times bigger than the allowable flag on non-residential property in the city. The city also says the pole cannot exceed 70 feet.
The city began citing Camping World last Wednesday.
The first citation brought a $50 fine, the second citation $100, while each subsequent one is $250.
As of Friday morning, there have been six citations for a total of $1,150 in fines.
However, the CEO of Camping World Marcus Lemonis said the giant flag is not coming down.
In a post on X in response to the violation notice from the city, Lemonis wrote: “The flag is not coming down. You can fine me all you want City of Greenville North Carolina. #NoAmericanFlagIsTooBig”
Earlier this month, city council denied a request from Camping World to allow the giant flag. The city said the company put the flag up knowingly in violation of the city’s regulations regarding the size.
Citations read, “Violators shall be issued a written citation which must be paid within 72 hours. If a person fails to pay the civil penalty within 72 hours, the city may recover the penalty together with all costs by filing a civil action in the general court of justice in the nature of a suit to collect a debt.”
The city told Camping World that they will continue to issue citations every day that the flag is left up.
The city is also requesting the flagpole be removed.
So far, Greenville has not taken Camping World to court to get them to pay the fines.
This is not the first time the company has flown big flags that brought about code violations. Two other cities eventually changed zoning regulations after the company paid the fines.
