WELCH, W.Va. – Starting around 18 years ago, the Council of the Southern Mountains has been helping McDowell County and surrounding communities by offering free tax services, which they are providing again this tax season.

Anyone who wants their taxes done needs their tax forms, like a W-2 or 1099, a photo ID, and the Social Security card of everyone in the household. For those looking to do direct deposit, a voided check is also needed.

For those filing jointly, both parties must have their needed documents and be present when picking up their taxes.

“We have seen a great impact, a big impact on it to where we was able to do 589 [returns] last year, and each year it goes up, the number goes up,” said Regina Sanders, Community Service Advocate for Council of the Southern Mountains.

The Council is offering in-person tax appointments on the first and third Saturday of every month until April 15. All other taxes will be done on a drop-off/pick-up schedule.

For more information, you can reach the Council at 304-436-6800.
