A gastroenterologist, has warned that vaping can cause significant and sometimes irreversible damage to the gut, putting vapers at risk of a range of life-long health conditions.

Dr Saurabh Sethi took to his TikTok channel @doctorsethimd to explain how vaping disrupts the gut microbiome: “Vaping chemicals can throw off the balance of good bacteria in your gut, leading to GI issues and chronic inflammation. Research shows that E-cigarette vapour can reduce beneficial gut bacteria.”

He also linked stomach sensitivity to the use of vapes, saying, “Vaping can trigger gut inflammation. The chemicals in vape liquids can irritate your gut lining, increasing the risk of conditions [such as] irritable bowel syndrome.”

He added that vaping could make some conditions worse: “Studies indicate that vaping can increase gut permeability and inflammation, worsening conditions like Crohn’s disease.” in a video that has been viewed thousands of times.

Dr Sethi also explained how vaping weakens your gut barrier, putting you at greater risk from toxins: “[These pass through] the gut lining into the bloodstream, which can increase your risk for autoimmune problems.”

For those looking to cut down or quit vaping, Dr Sethi offered advice: “Start by setting clear goals and gradually lower nicotine intake. Replace vaping with healthier habits, like chewing gum or exercising. Seek support from friends, family, or groups. And avoid triggers that increase cravings. With patience and persistence, you can break the habit and reduce health risks.”

The NHS also offers advice on how to quit vaping, advising that: “Cutting down on nicotine vaping gradually can make quitting easier. This gives your body time to adjust to lower nicotine levels.”
