A Hamilton church will host a unique escape room experience with a wedding theme ahead of Valentine’s Day.

The mystery puzzle event, entitled When Harry Met Winnie, takes place at Hamilton Old Parish Church on Friday, February 7.

It follows the success of a similar event last year at the 18th-century venue – the oldest building in Hamilton still used for its original purpose – making full use of its historic features and atmospheric surroundings including its graveyard.

Teams attending the new escape room will work to solve a series of clues or riddles to discover whether or not a particular wedding took place in the church, and are even welcome to come along dressed in their best guest finery.

With the rise in popularity of escape room challenges in recent years, the creative congregation at the Leechlee Road church began to design and run their own to give “a low-cost alternative to a trip into the city to enjoy a night of fun” and making use of their “perfect” church and graveyard setting.

Reverend Ross Blackman said: “Our first escape room gave us the opportunity to blend some of the history of Hamilton and the church with the script we’d written for the escape room.

“Our church is not only beautiful but also very historic – and we used the Covenanters’ memorial in the graveyard as one of the clues and the Provost’s chair as another, telling the story of a fight over seats in the church that went all the way to the House of Lords.”

Start times for the February 7 event – described as suitable for all ages – are from 6pm onwards; tickets cost £5 per person and are available from [email protected] or by calling 01698 281905, and there will also be a bar and refreshments available.
