(Gray News) – The U.S. Department of the Interior said efforts are underway to implement Trump’s geographic name changes.
The department released a statement Friday announcing the change.
“As directed by the President, the Gulf of Mexico will now officially be known as the Gulf of America and North America’s highest peak will once again bear the name Mount McKinley,” the statement said.
Trump signed an executive order earlier this week renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. He also ordered the name of the highest mountain in North America to be reverted to Mount McKinley. President Barack Obama changed the name to Denali in 2015.
The department said the U.S. Board on Geographic Names is working to update the “official federal nomenclature in the Geographic Names Information System” to reflect Trump’s executive order.
The department said these changes would be effective immediately for federal use.
