Dancing On Ice’s most successful season to date has been revealed in a new study.
The ITV show is currently in the midst of its 17th season but there is one season in particular that seemingly stood out for viewers.
Dancing on Ice odds makers LeoVegas used Google Keywords Planner to analyse the average number of monthly searches for the term ‘Dancing on Ice’ between 2006 and 2025.
Their findings revealed that season 11 was the most popular among fans with a search volume of 674,715 in January 2019 when the season first aired, significantly surpassing the popularity of any other year since the show first aired almost 20 years ago.
Season 11 performed exceptionally well among fans for several reasons, one of which was the show’s four-year hiatus from 2014 to 2018 prior to its return.
The 2019 show marked the second season since the revival of Dancing on Ice with the contestant line up featuring a diverse mix of well-known celebrities from various fields.
Notable stars included former Strictly professional, James Jordan, TOWIE icon Gemma Collins and Westlife singer Brian McFadden.
Gemma Collins was a standout figure on season 11 of the ITV show, paired with Matt Evans. Despite scoring 16/40 in week one and placing fourth, she topped the public vote with 28.23%.
In week three, after scoring 13/40, Gemma slammed judge Jason Gardiner for allegedly selling stories about her, following his savage comments on her weight.
Meanwhile, in week four, she skated to “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now”, showing improvement but suffering a painful fall that left her with lasting knee injuries. That same week, she was awarded her highest score of 16.5/40 but stayed at the bottom of the leaderboard.
Despite setbacks in later weeks, including reduced confidence, she continued to captivate the public until week six, when she was eliminated after her skate-off performance to “Queen of the Night”.
Another factor behind the popularity of season 11 was the high high-calibre performances of many contestants, particularly James Jordan.
His professional dancer background gave him a natural edge, delivering routines that impressed both the judges and the audience, further elevating the season’s appeal.
While season 11 claimed the top spot as the most popular season, the tenth season of Dancing on Ice came in at second most popular.
In January 2018, the term “Dancing on Ice” garnered an impressive 528,977 searches, showcasing the excitement surrounding the show’s return after a four-year hiatus.
The 10th season’s success can be attributed to a strong marketing campaign, a star-studded lineup, and the nostalgia of seeing the beloved ice-dancing competition back on screens.
However, the show’s future is now hanging in the balance once more after Gambling.com’s Entertainment expert, James Leyfield revealed that average viewing figures have significantly fallen since last year.
The Record previously reported that an average of 2.9 million watched Dancing on Ice’s opening episode on January 14, compared to an average of 3.6 million who watched the launch episode last year.
The ITV skating show is now into just 1/2, from 8/13 with a 66% probability that the programme will be axed later this year. It’s 8/11 that Dancing On Ice ends in 2026.
In addition to this, it’s believed that Dancing on Ice legends Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean may finally give up their roles as judges on the show after this season.
Dancing On Ice returns to screens on Sunday January 26 at 6:30pm on ITV.
