This Morning’s Craig Doyle has shared a dramatic account of how his balcony ‘exploded’ amid the havoc wreaked by Storm Eowyn. On Friday’s (January 24) show, broadcast live from Wicklow National Park in Ireland, Craig described to hosts Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond the intense impact of the storm.
“It’s pretty bad, actually. At 5 o’clock this morning it hit so hard, I’ve never heard winds like it,” he recounted. Craig detailed a harrowing moment: “About an hour ago there was a big explosion, and basically the wind came through and just ripped apart our balcony and all the glass smashed out of it,” leading to a stunned reaction from Alison who exclaimed: “Oh my god.”
Craig added: “I know, it’s crazy right? That’s been there a long time, big wooden struts and it just ripped it all apart, glass flying everywhere, a huge smash. That’s scary winds, to do damage like that is really scary.”
He noted that while Ireland is accustomed to harsh weather, the intensity of this storm brought an “unbelievable” fear factor.
Craig also mentioned joining a waiting list for gas due to the extensive damage. “It could take a week to fix all this stuff because of the amount of damage, so it does feel different. It feels a little scarier,” he said, reports the Mirror.
Reflecting on the morning’s frightening event, Craig shared: “I was really shocked, actually, when the balcony kind of exploded with the wind this morning. This house is built on a mountain and we built it to withstand heavy winds, but we haven’t experienced anything like this before. I’m a bit nervy being out here.”
Dermot has revealed that his parents in Wexford have begun charging their electrical devices, including their hearing aids, in anticipation of potential power outages.
Storm Eowyn hit the British Isles earlier today, with red weather warnings issued for Northern Ireland and central Scotland.
A record-breaking wind speed of 114mph was recorded in Ireland earlier today, and turbulent conditions are expected to cause chaos across the country. Millions have been advised to stay indoors and avoid travelling during the storm, with numerous schools shutting down and train services being suspended in some areas.
