A lorry has blown over on a major motorway during Storm Éowyn.
Emergency services raced to the incident on the A19 northbound in Sunderland after receiving the alarm at 10.20am on Friday. It has been confirmed there are no serious injuries.
Footage from the scene shows the vehicle flipped onto its side with the windscreen smashed. It also appears to have collided with a barrier.
Police and ambulance crews can also be seen in attendance with large tailbacks behind. The road was closed northbound between the A1018 and the A690 and motorists were encouraged to find alternative routes.
A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “At 10.20am today (Friday) we received a report that a vehicle had overturned on the A19 northbound close to the junction with Herrington Interchange in Sunderland. Emergency services are in attendance and no-one is believed to have been seriously injured.
“A section of the road is currently closed to allow for recovery of the vehicle involved. Motorists should use alternative routes where possible.”
It comes as Storm Éowyn batters the UK with gusts of up to 100mph expected in coastal areas. In Scotland, schools have been closed with rail and ferry services axed.
A rare red weather alert remains in place until 5pm on Friday.
