(Gray News) – Men have grown taller and heavier much faster than women over the past century, according to a new study published in “Biology Letters.”

The size of human beings in general has increased thanks to better health and nutrition but in particular, men have increased in size at twice the rate of women.

One of the study’s authors says sexual selection in evolution could be a major factor.

In the past, taller, heavier men tended to outcompete smaller men, gaining more access to women and passing on their genes.

Researchers analyzed data from the World Health Organization on more than 100,000 people in 69 countries.
