The way you store bananas can make the difference between them staying fresh for weeks or spoiling within days. Banana bread enthusiasts might not mind a few brown bananas, but if you’re looking to enjoy a firm banana as part of a nutritious breakfast, avoiding mushiness is key.
If your bananas are turning brown too quickly, it’s time to reconsider your storage method. There are tricks to both hasten and delay the ripening of bananas, and one TikTok user has shared her advice for prolonging their freshness.
Victoria, from the TikTok account @victorias. way, revealed that refrigeration and aluminium foil are essential for keeping bananas fresh, reports the Express.
In her video, Victoria demonstrates how wrapping the stems of ripe bananas in tin foil can extend their shelf life, captioning the clip: “Life hack on how to store bananas for two weeks so they don’t spoil in two days.”
She explains that the ethylene gas emitted from the stems promotes ripening, so sealing them with foil can slow down the process. While some may use cling film, foil is said to be more effective.
After wrapping the stems, Victoria places the bananas in the fridge’s drawer compartment, where the cooler temperature further inhibits ripening.
It’s important to remember that bananas should only be refrigerated once fully ripe to avoid a lacklustre taste. Following a few days of refrigeration, bananas may exhibit browning skins, however, the fruit within remains perfectly edible.
