One casualty was rescued by firefighters and rushed to hospital for treatment.

A window of the property could be seen completely burnt-out once the fire was put out and the area was made safe.

An eye-witness, who filmed the incident, said: “It was just before midnight and we noticed there was smoke coming from one of the flats with a police car with lights on in the square. We drove round the back and the smoke was getting worse.

“The police were knocking all the doors to evacuate everyone. Two fire engines arrived and they managed to put the fire out quite quickly.

“It was really scary to watch.”
