Rangers’ record of being the worst Champions League team in history could soon be banished – by Celtic‘s Euro foes.
Gio van Bronckhorst‘s side suffered a humiliating group stage campaign in 2022/23, losing all six games and scoring just one goal – leaving them with a pitiful goal difference of -20. Gers also suffered their joint-heaviest hiding in Europe that year when Liverpool ran riot at Ibrox, storming to a 7-1 victory. It meant the Light Blues were consigned to the worst group stage record since the competition was renamed in 1992.
However, three seasons on from that horrid run of results against Liverpool, Ajax and Napoli in Group A, the unwanted record may soon be eclipsed by Youngs Boys and Slovan Bratislava. Swiss champs Young Boys are rock bottom of this year’s new-look league phase without a single point and a woeful goal difference of -20, the same as Rangers.
And that’s put Georgio Contini’s 36th-placed strugglers – who lost 1-0 at Parkhead last week – on the brink of becoming the worst side in ‘group stage’ history. Of course, this comes with a caveat, as this year’s revamped format means teams now play eight games instead of six, as Gers encountered three years ago.
Young Boys have just one last chance to spare themselves from the ignominy of failing to pick up a single point from a possible 24 when they host Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday. Anything less than a draw could see them move out on their own. The same goes for Slovan Bratislava, who are on course for eight straight losses unless they can pull off a major upset away to Bayern Munich on matchday eight.
Celtic thumped the Slovakians 5-1 back in September – their biggest-ever Champions League win – and successive defeats leaves them in 35th with a goal difference of -18. Another battering at the Allianz Arena could see them bow out as the worst-ever team in the competition’s history.
