OVERTON, Texas — A rooster has found himself a big hit in a small East Texas town.

“Ol’ Red,” as he’s affectionately known by some of the locals, is a rooster who showed up at the Brookshire’s grocery store in Overton – about four hours east of Austin – and never really left.

According to KVUE’s news partners, KLTV, Ol’ Red shows up to the store at around 7 a.m. each day and leaves around sunset.

No one knows where he came from, but the community has embraced him, even creating a Facebook page so residents can share photos and updates about his daily visits. The page’s photo album, titled “Big Chicken,” includes nearly 50 photos.

“I absolutely love this,” commenter Amanda Holland said.

“If anything happens to him, can Overton afford to buy a monument for him?” asked another commenter, Draven Abis.

Others shared that the rooster seems to be a big fan of the community as well, with commenter Dave Hein calling him a “real people lover.”

I live in the town Ol’ Red if from. He’s a people chicken, that’s for sure. Everybody loves him,” Deb Vondrasek commented. “We are a small town of about 2,700 people, and he hangs out at the only grocery store we have … There is a feed store behind the grocery store. [I] think he gets a few kickbacks from there.”
