Scot Mills started his new stint as host of BBC Radio 2’s Breakfast Show this morning as pal Rylan Clark took a pop at him. Scott stepped in to the coveted role after it was announced in November Zoe Ball was moving on after six years on the show.

Scott, 51, spoke to Eurovision co-host and friend Rylan, 36, ahead of his debut. Former X Factor star Rylan jokingly raised concerns about Scott’s new gig.

As they discussed the format fans can expect on Scott’s new daily programme, Rylan said: “You really need to be on your game for breakfast, because it’s that time of the morning.

“You could be a little bit tired, you could press the wrong button, your finger could slip, you could say the wrong thing, not that I’m trying to scare you.”

Scott agreed with Rylan, who then reminded listeners of his Radio 2 weekend show that he’d seen first hand how Scott handled early mornings, adding: “No, I remember coming into your bedroom at Eurovision and your lovely husband Sam was there and I was like, ‘Where is he? I need him to tan my back’. “And you were, literally, I think crawling into the shower.”

Scott then hinted he’d been a bit under the weather after the Eurovision Song Contest as he went on: “Well that’s because we had a night out, so that’s not the same,” he replied.

However, despite his joking about the early wake up calls, Scott is no stranger to unsociable hours having worked in the 4am slot at BBC Radio 1 during his 24-year tenure at the station.

Sharing Zoe’s reaction to him replacing her, he told The Sun: “Zoe was the first person that really did take me under her wing at Radio 1. “I was chatting with her at the weekend and she said when she found out that it was me taking over her show, she just sobbed. “She was like, ‘That’s the rightful owner’. So, that’s really sweet.”

Zoe announced her departure in November. The star, 53, said: “After six incredible years on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show, it’s time for me to step away from the very early mornings and focus on family. It’s been a privilege. I think the world of you listeners and I’m grateful to my bosses here for their support, especially this year.

“Huge thanks go to my awesome team on the show, Tina, Mike and Richie, and of course our listeners, with whom I’ve shared some of life’s highs and lows, the good, the bad and the daft times.”

Speaking of Scott’s takeover, Zoe added: “Scott and I go way back to our Radio 1 days, when he was doing early mornings before me.

“He’s been a close friend for years, and I’m beyond thrilled it’s him taking over the Breakfast Show. Breakfast has always been his dream, and what a year he’s had – from racing around the world to his beautiful wedding to Sam.

“He’s not only a blooming brilliant producer but one of the best in radio. I can’t wait to tune in on the school run!”
