Schools remain closed across Scotland as the clear-up operation in the aftermath of Storm Éowyn continues.

Thousands of pupils are being kept home on Monday, January 27, after school buildings were damaged by the 100mph gusts which hit the country on Friday.

Many local authorities made the decision to close schools ahead of the extreme weather, as a rare Met Office red weather warning was enforced. Councils have kept parents informed via their websites and official social media pages on which schools are still unable to open.

Storm Éowyn is said to have been the worst storm to hit Scotland in decades, resulting in damage and destruction to buildings, and severe disruption to travel. Scots were advised not to leave their homes unless absolutely necessary, to prevent injuries.

Roofs and signage were torn off by the wind, with several walls collapsing, littering roads with debris in some places. Several roads were also blocked by falling trees.

Over 500 incidents were reported on the railways, with many ScotRail services suspended over the weekend as Network Rail worked to clear blockages and carry out repairs.

The rail operator confirmed today that trains on the majority of routes were back up and running, but there is still ongoing disruption in some parts of the network where more damage was seen.

The gusts proved fatal when 19-year-old Calum Carmichael died after a tree fell on his car in Mauchline, East Ayrshire on Friday morning. Tributes have since been paid to the teenager on social media.

John Swinney appealed for “patience” from the public as work to restore power and transport services was carried out.
