There’s nothing quite like a new pair of trainers to spruce up your wardrobe, but keeping them clean is no easy feat. Mud can quickly become the bane of your footwear, particularly if you wear them a lot.

White trainers are especially prone to showing dirt, and it doesn’t take long for them to appear shabby. But before you consider splashing out on a replacement pair, why not try giving them a good clean?

You can do this at home using your washing machine, reports the Express. With just two basic cleaning products, you can make your trainers look brand new again, as demonstrated by a social media expert.

The handy tip was shared on TikTok by @homewithlese, who has racked up over 49k followers with her straightforward cleaning hacks for the home.

She explains that reviving your grubby white trainers can be achieved using two household staples, restoring them to their former dazzling whiteness.

Demonstrating on a pair of New Balance trainers that had clearly seen better days, she applied her cleaning trick, and the result was a pair of trainers that looked fresh out of the box.

To try this at home, start by removing the laces from your shoes. Then, apply bicarb cream – available for £2.50 from Poundstretcher – all over the trainers, scrubbing it in with a brush.

You can also apply this cleaning method to the inside of the shoe if it requires a clean.

Next, place the trainers and laces in a mesh laundry bag if you have one – otherwise, a pillowcase will do.

Put the bag or pillowcase into the washing machine and add some bicarbonate of soda into the drum, before setting the machine to a cold wash – this should help prevent the colours from running.

Once the cycle is complete, remove the trainers and they should be perfectly clean once again.

Ensure they are completely dry before wearing them again, so place them on a radiator for a few hours to achieve this, or air-dry them outside if the weather permits.
