St Patrick’s Primary School and Nursery will remain closed until Wednesday after its roof was badly damaged by Storm Eowyn.

South Lanarkshire Council said that due to “extensive” storm damage, the Strathaven school will be closed to all pupils and staff today and tomorrow (Monday, January 27 till Tuesday, January 28).

Winds of 100mph battered South Lanarkshire with hurricane-force gales on Friday, January 24 during the storm which prompted a red weather warning from the Met Office.

All other schools will return today after the council inspected storm damage and power was restored to thousands of homes over the weekend as the clean up from Storm Eowyn continues.

Forth Primary School and Nursery Class, Wooddean ELC, Bothwell and St Mary’s in Larkhall all had an 11am delayed start today due to heating problems.

A post on the local authority’s social media reads: “Due to extensive damage caused by Storm Eowyn, St Patrick’s Primary School and Nursery Class in Strathaven will remain closed to all pupils and staff on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 January.

“We are actively working on contingency plans to maintain continuity of learning during this period. Further updates and information will be provided to all parents and carers as soon as possible.”
