At least six people have been injured after a passenger plane violently jolted, resulting in the pilot making an emergency landing.

The United Airlines flight from Lagos, Nigeria, was 93 minutes into its journey to Washington DC on Friday, January 24, when a technical fault caused the sudden jolt. Footage from inside the cabin shows food trays scattered on the floor of the aisle.

Data from FlightRadar shows the altitude of the Boeing 787-8 dropped without warning. Of the 245 passengers and 11 crew members on board, six were taken to hospital after the flight returned to Lagos, according to CNN.

The cause of the incident is yet to be determined, although the airline has confirmed it was not severe turbulence, and said an investigation has been launched alongside aviation authorities.
