Hollywood legend Harrison Ford is set to bring his star power to a new series of adverts for Glenmorangie whisky. The acclaimed Star Wars actor has extolled the virtues of the “unpretentious and amusing” commercials, which offer a glimpse into the production of Glenmorangie Original 12 Years Old and The Infinita 18 Years Old at their home in Tain, Highlands.
Joel Edgerton, who appeared in two of the Star Wars movies that didn’t feature Ford, directed the episodic films titled ‘Once Upon a Time in Scotland’. The whisky brand hails these as a celebration of “the significance of its home, its craftsmanship and the people that make its award-winning whiskies”.
Ford features prominently throughout the campaign, engaging with Scottish traditions such as pronunciation challenges and kilt-wearing, while also enjoying the company of locals over a glass of fine single malt.
The ad series showcases regional highlights, including Loch Glass and Ardross Castle — recognized from ‘The Traitors‘ TV series — as well as celebrating the dedicated workers at the distillery, which boasts a venerable 180-year history in whisky production.
Accompanying the 12-episode narrative and main film are striking stills from renowned fashion photographer Lachlan Bailey, capturing Ford donned in a Palace streetwear brand kilt. The adventure begins with six episodes due for release across television and social media platforms.
On his experience, Ford reflected: “I loved working with the team at the distillery – they were all great. The whole process of filming was full of unanticipated joys, little unexpected moments.
“It’s a tribute to Glenmorangie’s sensibilities that they let us be less than totally serious. I think what Joel has produced has a certain charm to it, because it’s unpretentious and just amusing.”
Caspar MacRae, president and chief executive of the Glenmorangie Company, expressed his enthusiasm about working with the acting legend: “Harrison Ford is the real deal: a true global icon, and a genuine whisky lover.”
“It was a dream come true to collaborate on this campaign, and welcome him to our home in the Highlands to discover more about Glenmorangie.”
Praising Ford’s dedication to his craft and its resonance with the distillery team’s own commitment, MacRae added: “He is someone who has honed his craft over decades, which gives him a real appreciation for the dedication and skill of our distillery team.”
“Like us, he’s not afraid to laugh at himself – and I think Joel has perfectly captured his authentic warmth, alongside his roguish sense of humour.”
MacRae hopes that whisky enthusiasts will be keen to delve into the series, saying: “We hope whisky lovers around the world will enjoy exploring the episodes, and learning more about the real people and places behind our whiskies, through Harrison’s eyes.”
Director Joel Edgerton shared his approach to the project, saying: “I’ve spent my whole life watching commercials that follow an expected format and so I really like it when things are a little disruptive, fun, and irreverent.
“It was nice that we got a chance within the very traditional industry of whisky to get behind the scenes, to subvert the seriousness that often goes into an advertising campaign and have fun with that.”
Edgerton added: “I hope that people get to see the short film and the full-length episodes – and enjoy them and share them around.”
